Telepresence Technology Initiative - Design for the Edges

I have spearheaded an initiative at Minneapolis Public Schools that utilizes telepresence technology to allow students who, due to a disability, cannot physically participate in general education classes. Often, these are students with Emotional Behavioral Disorders or Autism Spectrum Disorders. While many students have the cognitive ability, their disability provides barriers to fully participating in general education classes. As a result hey receive most of their education in a Special Education setting.

Telepresence technology will allow students to physically remain in location that can support their need, but still participate in general education classes. Telepresence robots go beyond video conferencing, it allows students move remotely move about a room. In a sense they can fully participate in a class: answer questions, ask questions, move about a room, participate in group discussion, interact with peers, etc...

This concept has been used by hospitals for students on extended stays to still virtually attend classes at their home school. We are now modifying that concept for students with some of the greatest needs. Our goal is to utilize technology to provide meaningful, enriching educational experiences for all students.

The program was highlighted in a story by the Minnpost - "Teacher-led innovation celebrated at summit in Minneapolis"
